Summer Camps in Poland and Hungary: How the Global Challenge Made It Possible

This year’s Global Challenge raised a record €775,000 – an achievement made possible by the dedication of volunteers worldwide. Thanks to these efforts, families living in vulnerable circumstances were able to experience moments of learning, relaxation, and friendship.

Among other countries, in Hungary and Poland, the funds supported traditional summer camps for parents and children aged 0–6, creating safe and inspiring environments where families could grow stronger together.

Hungary: Two Camps, One Mission

"The idea of the whole family camping together and everyone spending their time usefully is revolutionary.”

For the third year in a row, The Human Safety Net parent-child camps in Hungary welcomed families living in challenging circumstances. This year, thanks to the fundraising efforts, not one but two camps were organised – giving more than 150 participants the chance to take part, compared with 90 last year.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the banks of the Danube in Budapest, the two-week program was a blend of development, relaxation, and fun. With the support of partners Home Start Hungary and Bridge Budapest, families could enjoy colourful and diverse activities.

  • Themes: Creativity and self-confidence were at the heart of the two camps. Expert speakers – including psychologists, educators, and researchers – guided parents through lectures and workshops on topics such as building self-confidence, career counselling, AI in everyday life, and parenting skills.
  • Workshops & Activities: Parents explored themes like resilience, boundaries, and sustainability, while children enjoyed eco-crafts, ninja obstacle courses, folk dancing, storytelling, music, and even time with a therapy dog.
  • Volunteers: Twenty volunteers contributed their time and energy, many returning for the third year to support workshops and activities.

Parents shared heartfelt feedback:

  • “This week was completely rejuvenating for me… I am very happy about the new connections and friendships I made.”
  • “The camp gave me new perspectives on my children and myself, and on our relationship.”
  • “The whole week was about acceptance – we took part in what was most useful for us.”

For many families, these camps were far more than just a summer break – they offered tools, confidence, and memories that will last long after the tents were folded away.

Poland: Expert Support and Lasting Care

In Poland, the “Wsparcie na Starcie” (“Support from the Start”) program brought together 16 families for six unforgettable days. Held in a family-friendly hotel, the camp provided a mix of workshops, consultations, and playful activities for children – all made possible by the Global Challenge.

Parents had access to over 100 hours of specialist consultations with experts including dentists, psychologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and sensory integration specialists. Sessions focused on speech development, posture, emotional resilience, and positive parenting.

While parents built knowledge and confidence, children enjoyed carefree play in a safe, nurturing environment. Volunteers were once again central to the camp’s success, supporting daily activities, assisting with logistics, and bringing energy and warmth to every moment.

Importantly, the camp’s impact doesn’t end after six days: part of the funds raised will be dedicated to providing ongoing psychological and therapeutic support for these families in the months ahead, ensuring long-term benefits.

A Global Effort, Local Impact

The success of these summer camps shows the power of our community. Every euro raised through the Global Challenge helps families unlock their potential, strengthen relationships, and build brighter futures.
