Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the Human Safety Net’s For Families program has partnered with OneSky for all children

Hong Kong is one of the world’s most densely populated city, and because of the lack of space, one of the most expensive places in the world to live in. Statistics show more than one fifth of the population lives below the poverty line, and nearly one fifth of those are children. Low-income families are often cramped in subdivided apartments, with the average living space per person around 50 square feet.

This has far reaching consequences. Research studies also show that children in disadvantaged families tend to have less access to opportunities and therefore more likely to remain poor in adulthood, creating intergenerational poverty.

In Hong Kong, the Human Safety Net’s For Families program has partnered with OneSky for all children to provide children, ages 0 – 6, an opportunity and space to play and grow through an educational play centre in Sham Shui Po, one of Hong Kong’s poorest areas. Through play, children are able to develop their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills. The program also aims at educating caregivers in OneSky’s responsive care approach, so that they can learn how to interact with a child to have a positive impact on the child’s development, especially in their formative years.

We hope that all children can grow in a loving and caring environment, with equal opportunities to maximize their full potential, and ultimately, break the cycle of poverty.

The program

The P. C. Lee OneSky Global Centre for Early Childhood Development opened in March 2020 to provide a space for vulnerable children to play and grow their physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills; as well as for their caregivers to learn about responsive care via the OneSky Approach in order to create lasting impact on the child’s development. We aim to impact over 2,500 families by the end of 2022.

The P. C. Lee OneSky Global Centre for Early Childhood Development in Hong Kong offers a community gathering place where vulnerable children, ages 0-6, and their caregivers can play and learn together. It features an indoor educational playground, facilitated play sessions, parenting-skills workshops, a family resource centre, and consultation and referral services, all available for free to qualified families.

In addition, the Centre is a training hub for global best practices in early childhood care and education. The Human Safety Net in Hong Kong sponsors the 0-2 play area and staff (Play Partner) training so they can in turn educate caregivers on the OneSky Approach.
