Laying the Foundations
The first phase, which started in 2021, served as a pilot in two distinct regions: Milan, Italy, and the Sorong and Raja Ampat areas in Indonesia. The project was originally co-created by The Human Safety Net, Aflatoun and UNICEF. The first phase reached 1,808 beneficiaries, with activities focused on introducing financial education into parenting support programs offered by NGO partners. The positive feedback from this pilot phase encouraged us to scale up the initiative.
Scaling Up
In the second phase, the project expanded to five additional countries: Germany, Spain, France, Poland, and India. The initiative also grew within Italy, extending to cities beyond Milan. A total of 16 NGOs participated, and the project reached 4,292 individuals, with an additional 300 expected in Poland by early 2025, bringing the total to 4,588 beneficiaries.
This phase involved selecting suitable NGOs from our network, adapting content to each country’s needs, and training NGO staff to deliver the program. Notably, 13 of the 16 NGOs have committed to integrating financial education into their family support programs.
Expanding Horizons
Launched in July 2024, the third phase extended the project to seven additional countries: Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Portugal, Argentina, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It also expanded activities in Indonesia and France by involving new NGOs.
This phase targets 12,000 additional beneficiaries by 2026. For the first time, NGOs outside our network can access training and resources through an open-source model. This approach ensures quality training and oversight during the first year of implementation, broadening the project’s reach and impact.
THSN Academy: Enabling Volunteer Support
The THSN Academy, developed in collaboration with Aflatoun, a training programme to equip volunteers to support NGOs in delivering financial education. So far, 18 volunteers from Generali Italia have been trained, with additional sessions planned in Poland and Bulgaria.
Looking Forward
With each phase, the Financial Education Project strengthens its capacity to empower families worldwide. By end of 2026, we aim to create lasting change for over 18,000 individuals, helping them build more secure and sustainable futures.
