Harnessing the Wind: The story of Baher

I hold a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering, MSc Management & Engineering in production systems and will be finishing my PhD in May of 2025. I have moved to Aachen for my Master studies, where I developed an AI-application in the mechanical engineering field.

Integration in Germany felt easy as I was part of an international community, thanks to the University. People are kind in Aachen, they are open and it’s quite international here, I like it very much. I joined a programme at the Bürgerstiftung Lebensraum Aachen to get the necessary training to be able to launch my startup Windlegs.

I received support on all the relevant topics like legal aspects, taxes, insurances. But what really makes the difference is the people involved, who are committed and passionate. The personal touch and their professional expertise are really supporting and helping. Even after finishing off the “official” 10-months-program, these contacts still carry on and are available when needed.

Windlegs is based on a patent registered in the field of AI in Germany and pending in Europe. It is a hardware-supported AI solution, which makes possible for the fi rst time to continuously, precisely and cost-effectively record torque and thus record the technical age of a wind turbine. This insight improves both runtime decisions and the ongoing operation of wind farms. This optimises operating times and reduces downtimes, resulting in lower operating costs and the avoidance of lost revenue.

Windlegs is currently being implemented on a wind turbine in the Netherlands. Windlegs was also the winner of the German Generali SME EnterPRIZE in the newcomer category. The programme equipped me with the right skills – professionally as well as personally – and has empowered me to build my own company. I have a clear vision, and I have the right tools and connections to put my business on the right track.
