MPI Generali is rolling up its sleeves to help disadvantaged communities across Malaysia.
The impact poverty has on family life remains one of the most significant challenges developing nations have to deal with. To make matters worse, recent increases in the cost of living raise the bar even further, making it harder for poor people to break the poverty cycle. Today in Malaysia, monthly household income for the poorest 40% of the population remains far below the country’s estimated living wage (2,848 Malaysian ringgit, or 600 euro)*.
In keeping with its mission to protect and empower communities, MPI Generali is now working to enhance the lives of underserved families in Malaysia through For Families, a program that is part of The Human Safety Net (THSN), Generali’s flagship initiative for communities and disadvantaged peoples all over the world.
“I am proud that THSN Malaysia will be our first full-scale CSR program. This workshop officially kick starts our plan to transform the lives of the underserved beyond our day-to-day business together,” said Oliver Tan, CEO of MPI Generali Malaysia, speaking at the kick-off workshop held in Kuala Lumpur on last April 2018. “The Human Safety Net allows us to integrate sustainability into everything that we do, becoming a company and brand with a purpose,” he added.
In addition to the local THSN core team, over 20 local leaders and key representatives from different functions as well as representatives from the shortlisted NGO, Yayasan Generasi Gemilang, gathered together to brainstorm ideas and develop activities for THSN Malaysia’s engagement plan.
Through its collaboration with Yayasan Generasi Gemilang, The Human Safety Net Malaysia will focus on helping disadvantaged families become financially and emotionally resilient, providing support, access to counseling and educational parenting sessions. The goal is to help these families build healthier, more stable family environments for their children, who in turn will have a better chance at breaking the poverty cycle as they grow up and enter the workforce.
“We have high ambitions. We really want to create a wave of positive change, one with limitless potential and extending across Malaysia. We’re going to connect with our communities and make a real difference!” added Joe Yee Leong, Country Manager for THSN Malaysia.
